State Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) was appointed as Democratic Whip by House Democrat leadership on Dec. 28.
Camilleri, who is entering his second term representing the 23rd District, will serve in the position for 2019-2020.
During his first term, Camilleri served as assistant Democratic leader and sat on the Education Reform and Energy Policy committees. He was also the minority vice chair for Commerce and Trade.
“I’m excited to take on this new leadership role in the State House because I can bring an even stronger voice to the table for Downriver and our issues,” Camilleri said in a statement.
“The people of Michigan made their voices heard on Election Day, and they want a government that works for them and puts their needs ahead of corporate profits. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside my colleagues to make Lansing work for working families and to provide real solutions to the challenges Michiganders face every day. Together, we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and finally fix our roads and bridges, protect our water and air, and ensure Michiganders have the strong paychecks and good benefits they need to take care of themselves and their families.”
On Thursday, Camilleri announced his assistant whips. They are Reps. John Cherry (D-Flint Township); Kevin Coleman (D-Westland); Padma Kuppa (D-Troy); Mari Manoogian (D-Bloomfield Township).
“This leadership team reflects the new face and energy of the House Democrats, who remain committed to fighting for the wages and benefits of working families across the state, a world-class education for every Michigander, and the safe roads we need to drive on,” Rep. Camilleri said. “I’m looking forward to working with this team to ensure that the priorities of everyday Michiganders are the focus of the work that’s done in the House,” Camilleri said.
The 23rd House District includes the communities of Brownstown Township, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile Township, Huron Township, Trenton, and Woodhaven.
