Officers Sterling Price and John Bettendorf were commended for persuading a suicidal woman to surrender her gun.
According to Huron Township Police Lieutenant Gary Dockter, Officers Price and Bettendorf arrived at the woman’s home on Ellis Street on March 15 and found the woman in a garage with a gun.
According to Lieutenant Dockter, the officers heard the woman say that she was going to point her gun at the officers in an attempt to make them shoot her.
Following an hour long negotiation, the woman agreed to surrender her weapon. Lieutenant Dockter said that the woman was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Both officers received letters of commendation and were publicly recognized at last week’s board meeting.
