Editor’s note: As the 2020 election draws near, the residents in Huron Township would like to hear more about each candidate that is running for office or reelection.
Recently, every person running on the Huron Township ballot was invited to use The Huron Hub as a platform to get their voice heard. All letters in this column are submitted by the candidates themselves and are not edited by Huron Hub staff. Letters are posted in the order they are received, and candidates have until Oct. 12 to submit their letters. Letters will not be accepted after Oct. 12.
Readers can access all candidate letters on a special section of HuronHub.com HERE.
The following letter was submitted by Will Hilliker:
ABOUT ME:
My name is Will Hilliker, and I have been a resident of Huron Township for 11 years. I have been
married to my wife, Shannon, for 18 years. We have two sons who had a wonderful experience
at Brown Elementary. They are now students at Renton Junior High and Huron High School.
My wife and I decided to move to Huron Township for several reasons. One of the primary
reasons was the school district. We viewed the positive upward trend in state and national test
scores as a sign of strong schools heading in the right direction. Another reason is the
small-town feel and strong sense of community in the township.
I have a diverse work history. I started out in commercial recreation, where I worked in and
managed various recreation-related entities. Then I transitioned into the information
technology field, working in both healthcare with Henry Ford System and the automotive
industry. Currently, I am in my 13th year at Monroe County Community College as a Professor
of Computer and Information Systems.
EDUCATION:
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Recreation and a Graduate Certificate in Management
Information Systems from Central Michigan University. I earned my Masters of Science in
Computer and Information Systems from the University of Detroit-Mercy. I completed a Master
of Business Administration in marketing degree from Wayne State University. Recently I
completed my Doctorate of Philosophy in Technology at Eastern Michigan University.
EXPERIENCE:
I have experience with faculty unions (currently holding an e-board position), teaching (ground,
hybrid/blended, and online), curriculum development, course assessment, project
management, generating articulation agreements, learning management software (LMS),
software requirements specifications, cybersecurity, Microsoft tools/software/operating
systems, open-source tools/software/operating systems, emotional intelligence, higher
education, research, documentation, training, and academic advising.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
My involvement in the community includes CyberPatriot Coach/Mentor, VEX Robotics Coach,
WATCH Dog at Brown Elementary, Brown PTO volunteer, Cub Scout Leader, Boy Scout Leader. I
currently serve as a Huron Township Parks and Recreation Commission Board Member.
WHY I AM PURSUING A SEAT ON THE SCHOOL BOARD
A healthy school district is a vital part of a community. With the recent passing of the bond in
2019, our community prioritized our schools, allowing for needed updates and upgrades to our
facilities. To continue this momentum, I would like to contribute my diverse educational and
professional background to work collaboratively and openly with all stakeholders — staff,
community members, and students to:
●Encourage technology growth
●Ensure that Huron students have opportunities to prepare them for their career choices
●Ensure that Huron can attract and retain the best teachers and staff
●Provide a safe learning environment for students and staff
Thank you for taking the time to consider my candidacy for the Huron Board of Education.
