WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Tuesday, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) was selected as one of 20 leaders from across the country to join the NewDEAL (Developing Exceptional American Leaders), a national network of state and local elected officials working to enact pro-growth progressive, innovative solutions in their communities.
“As community leaders, we have a responsibility to look toward the future and enact policy to ensure we leave our environment, economy and education system better than we found it,” said Rep. Camilleri. “I am honored to join this esteemed group of progressive leaders from across the country as we work together to create an America where no one is held back because of their background, their faith or their financial situation.”
Since Rep. Camilleri joined the Legislature in 2017, he has stood as a steadfast advocate for public education, environmental protection and workers across the state, all while advocating for increased government transparency and accountability. Most recently, legislation introduced by Rep. Camilleri – House Bill 4016 – to subject the governor’s office to the Freedom of Information Act and the Legislature to a new Legislative Open Records Act, passed the House with unanimous support and now awaits a hearing in the Senate.
Rep. Camilleri’s commitment to ensuring Michigan’s economy provides for working families across the state also drove his nomination to NewDEAL. His recent introduction of legislation in the “Michigan Jobs First Package,” a group of bills that would give preference to Michigan companies in state contracts, demonstrates his dedication to moving our state toward a better future for all.
The NewDEAL brings together leaders focused on expanding opportunity, helping them develop and spread innovative ideas to spur economic growth that is broadly-earned and sustainable. Most importantly, the organization facilitates the exchange of ideas among its members and connects them with other pro-growth progressive political, policy, and private sector leaders.
