The Huron Township community came together today to honor a local hero.
Master Sgt. Amanda West, a Huron Township resident who passed away March 17 from cancer, was escorted to a memorial service by the township’s public safety department.
West served nearly 20 years in the United States Army.
The escort route on Friday started at Michigan Memorial Park and winded along Huron River Drive past Huron High School and Renton Junior High.
Students from both schools stood along the route, some holding American flags, to honor the fallen Army sergeant.
The escort then passed by Brown Elementary, where school students stood outside to witness the procession.
The escort traveled through other Downriver communities before it ended at a memorial service in Riverview.
