With the change in weather comes a rise in pedestrian traffic near roadways, parking lots, and in school zones.

The Huron Township Police Department is warning drivers to slow down in school zones, and to come to a full stop if you see a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop sign engaged.

“There will be increased traffic enforcement daily around the Huron and Summit Academy schools,” said Public Safety Director Everette Robbins.

“We want drivers to know that we will continue to have a zero-tolerance policy as it relates to drivers that pass the school bus while its emergency lights are activated. There is nowhere that is so important to be quickly that it is worth injuring or killing a child as they get on or get off the school bus.”

Robbins said that undercover officers will be placed on buses to keep an eye out for motorists who pass illegally.

“We have partnered with the Huron School District this year and placed undercover officers on buses to help catch those that feel it necessary to pass the bus and put our students in harm’s way. We will continue that this spring and hold drivers accountable,” he said.

Additionally, high school drivers should use caution in the school parking lot.

“Parents should also talk to their high school drivers and make sure they understand the importance of driving safely in the school parking lot. With spring sports in full swing, there is a lot of pedestrian traffic in the parking lots.”
