A downed power line caused by Wednesday’s historic wind storm ignited a home on King Road in Huron Township, causing it to burn down overnight.
A family, including two young girls ages 2 and 3, live at the home, and were able to make it out safely before the fire ignited.
Huron Township firefighters were already at the scene before the fire started, working a call of another fire that had occurred in the same area.
During that time, they observed the dangerous situation facing the home, and were able to help the family safely leave with some belongings.
Because of the high volume of calls in the region, DTE said they could not send a line crew to shut off the power.
the line fell on the home and caused a large fire that eventually destroyed the home.
As of Thursday morning, members in the Huron community have already stepped up in an effort to help the displaced family.
Trixie’s Diner, 37005 Huron River Drive in downtown New Boston, is accepting donations for the family.
“This family is going to need a lot of help,” said Jennifer Cox, owner of Trixie’s.
Cox said that she wants to also host a benefit dinner for the family at her restaurant, and that the details are currently in the works. For specific questions about donations, please call the diner at 734-606-5454.
