Sondra Robin was not only a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend; she was a fighter. She fought to her last breath and that was just how Sandy conducted life. By profession, Sandy was a registered nurse and worked doing what she loved until she was first diagnosed with HER-2 breast cancer in 2002. After her first mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation, Sandy found that she needed to direct her nursing skills in a different direction to help women like herself; women that had their world’s turned upside down. So, she opened Always A Women, which was a shop where women could get wigs, breast prosthetics, and more importantly, support in the Downriver community. Unfortunately in 2004, Sandy’s breast cancer returned to her lungs. She underwent a stem cell transplant, which gave her 7 healthy years of life. In 2011, her cancer returned. She had so much more fight left. Once again, Sandy had another mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. By 2014, Sandy was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer that had spread to her brain. With not many options left, she underwent more radiation and In May of 2015 at the age of 58, her battle was over.
Through her journey, Sandy was involved in her community, she was active with the Huron High School and their outdoor challenge club. She also assisted the Huron Township Rotary, her husband was a member. Sandy was an active member of Soroptimist of Flat Rock for 12 years, she served as Treasurer, Vice President, and then President. Soroptimist International is an organization for business and professional women that work to improve the lives of women and girls. Locally, the Soroptimist of Flat Rock gives educational grants to young women pursuing further education. They donate to a multitude of other local causes. Sandy truly believed in giving back to her community and helping women in whatever battles they were personally fighting. On October 8th, 2016, in memory of Sandy, Soroptimist International of Flat Rock Area will host an Annual Sondra Robin Memorial Road Rally. Proceeds will be distributed by Women Celebrating Life-Downriver, which is a local non-profit organization that helps individual women in their battle with breast cancer.
