A new service called Simple Recycling, launched in Huron Township at the end of June, now gives residents an easy way to ensure that recyclable items don’t end up in landfills.

In fact, you may have noticed their specially marked vans traveling around the township on your recycle day.

The way it works is quite simple: use their special green bags to fill with recyclable items, place them next to your recycle bins during your normally scheduled recycle pickup day, and Simple Recycling will collect the bags and recycle the contents.

And, according to their website, the service is free to cities, residents, and all who participate in the effort to recycle.

Recyclable items include men’s clothing, women’s clothing, children’s clothing, coats and jackets, jewelry, shoes, purses, hats, toys, pictures, mirrors, blankets, drapes/curtains, small furniture, pillows, sleeping bags, small appliances, irons, radios, lamps, hairdryers, tools, coasters, microwave, coffee makers, silverware, dishes, pots/pans, glasses and backpacks.

Items the service does not collect include: appliances, furniture, tires, paint, carpeting, mattresses, traditional recyclables (metal, glass, paper), hazardous waste.

According to Simple Recycling, after collection, all of the materials are graded and sorted locally based on quality and condition. The top quality materials will be resold to local thrift outlets, mid grade is exported to international markets and “unusable” items are processed for raw materials.

Simple Recycling says they are a for profit recycler that is committed to offering residents the most simple and easy way to keep usable materials from the landfill.

The company says that 85 percent of textiles are not recycled or donated, and that the EPA estimates 70 pounds per person of clothing are thrown away each year.

Naturally, with a new service like this, residents may have multiple questions. To request the special recycling bags, or for more information, visit Simple Recycling’s frequently asked questions website at http://simplerecycling.com/supplies/, or call 866-835-5068.
