A 23-year-old woman from Huron Township and a 25-year-old man from Dearborn were arrested Tuesday after falsely reporting a robbery and shooting to Huron Township Police.
Police received a call from two people in the 17900 block of Hannan Road, who reported that unknown subjects attempted to rob them at gunpoint, and after fleeing, the robbers shot the man in the leg multiple times with an airsoft gun.
The Huron Township Police Detective Bureau investigated the incident for several hours Tuesday, revealing that the reports were false and that the attempted robbery never occurred. The injured person, according to police, was shot by an intoxicated person.
“We spent a lot of resources today investigating a serious crime that did not happen. Both subjects will face the consequences of their actions,” said Police Chief Everette Robbins.
“My understanding is there may be information out there on social media that we had a robbery and shooting occur last night. I want to get information out to the public quickly that no attempt robbery or shooting occurred last night. Both subjects are cooperating with us and have admitted to falsifying their statements,” he said.
“I am glad our Detective Bureau and Evidence Tech Unit were able to get this situation sorted out quickly to avoid misinformation or panic within our community during a busy holiday week.”
Both suspects are being held at the Huron Township Police Department prior to their arraignment.
