If you’re looking for a reason to move to — or stay — in Huron Township, this may be it.

A report published by Safewise — which is a self-procalimed community focused safety organization — listed Huron Township as one of the 50 safest cities in the state of Michigan.

Released on August 3, the report combined Safewise research along with data from the most recent 2013 FBI crime reports to create a list of the 50 safest cities in Michigan. Included in these statistics were property crime (arson, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft) and violent crime (robbery, murder, aggravated assault, rape).

Safewise then calculated the chance of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.

Huron Township came in at number 50, just making the cut.

Statistics for Huron show a population of 15,607 with 2.43 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, and 13 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

All of the cities listed in the report had a minimum population of 5,000 residents.

“Residents in Huron Township don’t have to wonder how safe their neighborhood is,” the report said.  “The city’s Crime Mapping Service provides up-to-the-minute crime and incident information at the click of a mouse. The service also allows citizens to offer anonymous information they have about any crime reported.”

Huron Township Police Chief Everette Robbins says that while making the list is a great thing, there is still room for progress.

“Although being in the top 50 safest places in Michigan is a start, we are striving every day to move up this list,” he said.

“I truly do not believe that there is a place that is safer than Huron Township to live and raise a family. I think that some of the statistics that caused us to be at this number were caused by a few individuals that were responsible for the string of break ins late last year. They have since been arrested and are being held accountable. Couple that with the high visibility of our officers and I would expect a much better ranking in the future,” he said.

Both Robbins and Safewise officials agree that a city filled with robust and vigilant community involvement will help it prosper and become a safe area for families and businesses to thrive.

“This is a great opportunity to get the word out to our residents to continue to be vigilant. Lock your doors and call immediately if you see anything out of the ordinary. Never hesitate to call us, our job is to respond and we are always happy to do so,” said Robbins.

Other local cities that made the list include Sumpter Township at 34, Riverview at 36 and Trenton at 43.

In March 2014, a similar report was released by Safewise using statistics from 2012, listing Huron at number 24 in the top safest cities category.
