Wayne County hosting free nature-oriented events at Crosswinds Marsh in June

Now that summer vacation has arrived, parents everywhere will be searching for fun and free events that the whole family can enjoy.

Wayne County will be proving some great local events in June at the Crosswinds Marsh located in Sumpter Township on Haggerty Road, north of Will Carleton Road.

The first free event will be a family fishing day on Saturday, June 13 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Fishing at the marsh can be enjoyed without needing a fishing license. Tackle tying and casting techniques will also be offered for children who are new to fishing. 1-24-2006-39

A contest will be held for biggest fish in age class for kids 17 years old an younger. Event goers can bring their own fishing gear, but if you don’t have your own there is no worry, the staff at the event can provide poles and bait.

On Wednesday, June 24, seniors can come out to the marsh to enjoy “Time Out For Seniors” from 10:00 a.m. to Noon.

At this event, A leisurely hike through the marshes and forests will focus on wildflowers, birds and wildlife. This event costs $2 and pre-registration is required. 2007-05-30 009

Nature Fest — another free event — will be on Saturday, June 27 from 1:00 — 4:00 p.m.

Families can participate in fun activities including free canoeing, live animal exhibits, a fishing contest, nature crafts and more.

There will also be a contest with prizes given for best nature photo and best nature drawing/painting.
